White oak is the hard one. Closed cell structure, rot resistant, and heavy enough that it was the default for barn framing, factory decking and whiskey cooperage across the upper South.
Reclaimed oak comes to us weathered grey on the outside and clean on the inside. Planed smooth it opens up into quartersawn ray fleck and tight rift grain; left dirty top it keeps the silvered saw face it wore for a hundred years.
It takes a stain more evenly than pine and it will not move much once it is in. If the job is a kitchen, a commercial floor, or anywhere with real traffic, this is the one we point people to.
